Red Zinfandel Beanie

It won’t hurt my feelings!

I don’t know about you, but I really love wine - particularly full-bodied red wines. When I saw the deep, rich purple color of this yarn, I just knew I had to make a wine-inspired crocheted item.

Thus was born the idea for the Red Zinfandel beanie. I wanted to create a hat that looked like a series of grapevines draping around the head. Using front post stitches and clusters, I was able to accomplish the spiral pattern and get exactly the vision I was hoping for.

I also knew that I wanted to design a pattern that would work up quickly, so I chose to use US K (6.5mm) and US J (6mm) hooks, which makes this a perfect project for creating last-minute gifts.

I created an acrylic version as well as a superwash Merino wool version, and both of them looked stunning! Pick up your own favorite worsted yarn and glass of wine to work up this quick beanie for those cool-weather months.

Notes

  • You will be working in rounds without turning. This means you will always work on the right side.

  • When you see instructions like “4 hdc”, that means to work one hdc into each of the next 4 sts.

  • Stitch counts are only given after increase rounds. If no stitch count is given, the stitch count is the same.

  • To create the spiral effect, you will do the following:

    • Work the first stitch of each new round into the second stitch of the previous round.

    • Work the final hdc or hdc2tog into the joining slip stitch followed by the final front post stitch.

  • Except for Rnd 2, all front post stitches (FPdc, FPcl, V-st) are worked around the next unworked post st.

  • When working the next hdc or hdc2tog after a front post stitch, you will work into the stitch directly behind the front post stitch you just created.
